Spanish for Reading Knowledge
with Faith Harden
Summer 2010
This intensive introduction to Spanish is designed primarily for students and professionals in all fields that require reading knowledge of Spanish. The course focuses on developing recognition of primary verb tenses and essential vocabulary for reading comprehension across a range of disciplines. Perfect for anyone needing to demonstrate reading proficiency in Spanish, whether in the sciences or the humanities, this class can also be taken by advanced beginners or intermediate students who simply wish to reinforce their reading skills and expand their vocabulary. At the conclusion of the course, an optional mock proficiency test with detailed feedback will be given to anyone planning to take the UVA Spanish Reading Proficiency exam. The textbook for the course is “Spanish for Reading and Translation” by Annette Cash and James Murray.
Entendiendo a tus Pacientes: Medical Spanish Workshop (Intermediate/Adv.)
with Martha Trujillo
TBA
If you are already proficient in Spanish, but need more practice with medical terms and situations, this is the class for you! Through a variety of activities – doctor and nurse/patient role-plays, grammar and vocabulary reviews, in-depth health care themes and discussions – you will both practice and perfect what you already know and develop the language skills that will help you communicate more effectively with – and understand – your patients. Native Spanish speakers from different countries will visit classes as mock patients to give participants the hands-on experience needed to improve their communicative skills. The first lesson will focus on basics like: health care cultural differences, medical history, vital signs, body parts and related illnesses and diseases and important, commonly-used vocabulary. After that, each lesson will focus on a specific topic (or two), to be chosen by the participants, including: Dental Health and Skin, Nutrition, Family Planning, Emergency Medicine, Reproductive Health, Pregnancy: Preparing for pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum, Children’s health/Pediatrics, Alcoholism and Drug Addiction, Cancer ( prostate, cervical, skin and colon), Diabetes and Emotional/Mental Health.
