Though we got our start with the Romance Languages, Speak! is now offering courses and services in ESL (English as a Second Language), Turkish, Russian, Mandarin Chinese and soon Japanese and Arabic. As we expand our menu of language offerings, please let us know if there is a language you desire to speak that we haven’t yet included in the language-culture spectrum. If we don’t have a group course offered, we will try to start one – or at least put you in touch with a local instructor or resource.
Conversational Mandarin Chinese
Chinese Open House/Conversation Hour: Saturdays 9:30am in June!
Come meet our Chinese instructors – Tianran and Hairuo – and practice your Mandarin (non-beginners!) at our free Saturday conversation hours. A great chance for new students to visit Speak! and for non-beginners to get a sense of their level for future courses. All are welcome to drop in! Learn Chinese from a native speaker! Our approach focuses on conversational Mandarin but will also teach pin-yin and basic characters. Beginner’s course is ideal for either total beginners or those who wish to refresh previous studies. Advanced beginners should already possess some basic speaking ability in Mandarin.

If you’ve studied the basics of English grammar but are still shy about speaking, this is the perfect course for you! With the expert guidance of ESL instructor Sharon Gress, you will practice speaking in a fun, supportive environment with only a few other new English speakers. A variety of topics will be discussed and pronunciation exercises will be incorporated into each lesson.
