Adam Winck to lead Speak!’s German Program

We are thrilled to welcome Adam Winck to our faculty! Adam is a member of our Department of Defense teaching team and will be teaching an immersion course in German starting in July. He is also available for one-on-one and custom small group courses for adults and teens. Visit our German page to register or contact us for more info. Welcome, Adam!

About Adam Winck:

Adam is a PhD student at the University of Virginia and is currently writing his dissertation on responses to print culture in 18th century Germany. He has years of German teaching experience, instructing graduate students, undergraduates, and high school students. Adam loves to incorporate the rich cultural tradition of Germany into language study, which he is able to do with a background in literature, theater, philosophy, and theology. As an undergraduate, Adam studied in Berlin where he nourished himself on the vibrant theater culture and fell in love with the opera. He has also studied for a year in Freiburg and taught literature seminars as a guest lecturer for a year at the University of Mannheim. As a graduate student, he has also led an undergraduate study abroad trip to Munich and Berlin. When not writing and teaching, Adam can be found training and racing on his bicycle, pulling espresso shots, or brewing delicious ales.

Español I en tres semanas!!  Join local Buford Middle School Spanish teacher (and Speak! Instructor), Sara Moses, for a 3-week intensive Spanish I class at Speak!

• Learn Spanish at a faster pace without the distractions of other classes
• Attain a level of proficiency equivalent to high-school Spanish I
• Develop an appreciation for Spanish language and culture

Your son or daughter will receive enthusiastic, small group instruction in grammar, vocabulary and conversational Spanish. The class is structured to provide a supportive and engaging environment where students feel comfortable learning a new language in a more intimate setting. Through oral presentations, interviews, songs, and small group skits and discussions, students will learn:

Speak! is partnering with the Virginia Discovery Museum for their next Teacher Work Day program, a Spanish immersion class!
Children will learn Spanish songs and stories as well as entertaining and engaging games in Spanish with teacher Sandra Michalski, a native of Spain. This class motivates children to play and learn the language while having lots of fun! Learning about Spanish culture and traditions through crafts, activities and dancing flamenco makes this class an unforgettable imaginary trip to Spain your children will love.

We are thrilled to announce that Speak! is now organizing the Lecture Series in conjunction with the MET HD Opera Broadcasts at The Paramount Theater. These 35-40 minute lectures are free to all MET HD ticket holders and take place upstairs at The Paramount before the shows (at 12:15pm).

Mary Ann Archer, flutist for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for 26 years, will present the talk on Sunday, December 16th before Verdi’s triumphant Un Ballo in Maschera. Her lecture will focus on ‘Themes and Colors in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera‘. Playing musical themes on flute, alto flute, and piccolo, Mary Ann will highlight the different ‘colors’ of the music Verdi wrote for the various characters in the opera.  Come hear the beautiful ‘praying music’ of Amelia, the short, sinister notes of the traitors, the dark, powerful music of the
fortune-teller Ulrica, the high, bright melodies of the page Oscar, and the powerful longing in King Gustavo’s themes.  Mary Ann will also include a few ways the orchestra members  ’enjoyed themselves’ while playing this beautiful score. Mary Ann will also discuss our Verd-focused summer 2013 trip : Opera in Italia, which includes a live performance of Un Ballo in Maschera at La Scala in Milan.

a collaboration between Speak! and Chroma Art Projects.

Speak! Language Center and Chroma Projects introduce their collaborative exhibition program – Galleria Due Voci/Two Voices Gallery -  in the two open classroom spaces of Speak! For our first collaborative exhibition, Due Voci will be presenting Rick Weaver’s jewel-like watercolors of the piazzas and marketplace scenes of Cortona, Italy in the front space, and Jennifer Byrne’s black and white photographic studies of Italian architecture, in the main room.

Let your kids blow off some post-Thanksgiving steam with us while you relax, hit the gym or brave the sales at local stores! Speak! will provide hours of fun and enriching French and Spanish playtime for kids 4-10 years old. Games, crafts, stories and free play typical of all Speak! kids programs will be offered. Katell will lead kids in French-themed play in the morning, while Sandra will lead Spanish activities in the afternoon. Sign up for a minimum of 2 hours.

Opera Enrichment Workshop with Ash Lawn Opera

In conjunction with its performances of the holiday classic, Amahl and the Night Visitors at The Paramount Theater, Ash Lawn Opera presents an interactive workshop for children to connect music, visual art, and the written world. Teaching Artist and elementary school music teacher, John Visel, along with a surprise performer, will make the story of Amahl come alive by encouraging the children to act and sing passages of it. Children will use paint markers and movement to reflect the shape of melodies and, in honor of the Three Kings in the opera, make and take home their own crown. Apple cider, sliced apples and cookies will be served. Recommended for ages 6 – 13.

Kids had a blast at our last opera enrichment workshop, focusing on The Magic Flute.
