Lesson Times: 9:00-10:00 (for children ages 6-10); 10:00-11:00 (for children ages 11-14)
Course Description: The goal of this class is for the children to develop basic listening comprehension proficiency and simple conversational skills. By listening to the teacher repeat the vocabulary in a fun and relaxed environment, they will learn some basic Japanese words and phrases such as numbers, animals, greetings, basic actions words, common words used daily life. The instructor will use activities such as games, songs, gesturing and creating stories with the children. The students will experience Japanese culture through all the activities.
About the teacher
Hiroko Schierman is from the prefecture of Okayama, in southwestern part of mainland Japan. She attended college in Tokyo where she studied American Culture and received a license to teach English. After graduating from college, Hiroko moved to Arizona, where she completed a Master’s degree at Arizona State in Theatre Education. She specialized in applying drama to the academic subjects. While in Arizona, Hiroko met and married her husband. They lived in Maryland and Georgia before coming to Virginia. In addition to teaching for Speak!, Hiroko is a Japanese teacher for Albemarle County schools. Hiroko enjoys spending her free time with her husband and two children, a son and a daughter.
