Camp up Close: Monet Activity
By Emily Martin
“Paris at the turn of the 20th century was the center of the art world. Rules were broken, movements were created, and artists flocked to the city to fill their canvases and study under the greats. Exhibiting under the Impressionist title since 1874, Claude Monet was no stranger to this arena. Deemed the father of the Impressionist Movement, Monet also had the luxury of escaping the bustle of the city to his house in Giverny, just 88 kilometers north-west of Paris. Between 1895 and his death in 1926, Monet painted more than 300 works and 40 large scale paintings of his garden, including his acclaimed Water Lilies. Using a watercolor technique, campers will re-create Monet’s Water Lilies as a group in mural-form. We will discuss his technique, plein air painting, the importance of Impressionist Art to art history as a whole, his daily life at Giverny, and how we can use his technique to practice painting in our own gardens. The mural will then be divided, separated, and rearranged as a giant performance puzzle, and also as an introduction to Cubism which we will cover with Picasso.”
We’re also enrolling for our Bon Voyage French camp as well as Spanish and Mandarin camps (Italian Art Camp is officially FULL)! Info, as always, on our Speak! KIDS page.
Learning as a family is fun, too! If you’re planning a family trip abroad and want to learn some French, Italian or Spanish before going we can customize a family or parent-child class for you!
